Notes on keyboard mapping under FreeBSD: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mapping the keys for "console mode": ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This approach (which is the one that I ended up using) works with the standard syscons termcap entry -- you do not need to modify your termcap, or change your terminal type to use it. 1) First and foremost, it should be noted that the keyboard mapping that I've done here only works on the console, using the syscons (default) driver. (If someone who is running the pcvt driver makes a similar map, please send it to me, we'll try to send it in future distributions.) 2) It is important to note that changing your keyboard map will change it for all of your virtual terminals. If you're using tn5250 in one session, and switch to another session to do something else, you will probably find that some keys do strange things. I tried to set things up so that pressing SHIFT with the remapped key will cause it to behave in its default manner... 3) Each key is read by the syscons driver, and associated with a specific ASCII code or key according to the keyboard map that you currently have loaded. The keyboard maps that come with FreeBSD are stored in /usr/share/syscons/keymap. I have provided a keyboard map called "us.5250.kbd" which is based on the United States ISO keyboard thats included with FreeBSD (us.iso.kbd). If you're living in another country, or would like to make your own customization to this map, it can be edited with vi, or the text editor of your choice. Use "kbdcontrol -l <mapname>" to load a new keyboard map. You can use "diff" to see what I changed between the files us.5250.kbd and /usr/share/syscons/keymap/us.iso.kbd to see what modifications I made, if you'd like to use that as a template for making a keyboard map for another country. 4) Function keys (fkey01-fkey63 in the keymap file) can be mapped to send a string. This allows us to make F13-F24 work without changing our termcap, and allows us to send more than one character (such as C-g H for Help, or C-g ! for F13) to the emulator. In my keyboard map, I disabled function keys 62-64 (normally the "Windows95 keys") so I could assign strings to some of the other keyboard keys. Use "kbdcontrol -f <n> <string>" to map a function key to a string, or "kbdcontrol -F" to reset the function keys to their default values. Example: kbdcontrol -f 5 "You pressed F5" 5) I created a script "5250keys" that will load my keyboard map, and then assign the strings for the various function keys. 6) You'll want to do: kbdcontrol -F kbdcontrol -l /usr/share/syscons/keymap/us.iso.kbd (or whatever map you use) To set your keyboard back to normal after using tn5250. In fact, you may want to write a script that alters your keyboard mapping, runs tn5250, then sets things back to normal... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keyboard mapping in an xterm (using the xt5250 script) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES: 1) The xt5250 script thats installed with the tn5250 automates the process of loading your keyboard mapping information from the XTerm file that it puts in /usr/local/share/tn5250/ and changes your TERM environment variable to xterm-5250. 2) The sample.termcap file thats contained in the tn5250 distribution has settings that appear to work great in FreeBSD 4.x, and also has (commented out) settings that work better in FreeBSD 3.x and older. INSTALLATION: 1) If the install script did not do it for you copy XTerm from the distribution to /usr/local/share/tn5250. 2) Check your .termcap or /etc/termcap and make sure that its got the entries for xterm-5250 in it. If you installed an older version of tn5250, please remove the old termcap entries and load the new ones from this distribution. That should do it! Now the xt5250 script should work nicely under FreeBSD!
